America is so messed up right now that somehow this makes sense.

I've made it. Now it's time to make it.

Two days, 1,450 miles, 257 dead bugs and three Red Bulls and two Amps later, I'm officially a resident of Boulder, CO. It's a rather bizarre thought.

Also, never ever ever drive through Kansas. That truthfully ranks up there as one of the worst things I've ever done. Seriously. Don't do it. It's a terrible state.

But Boulder seems cool enough, in the two hours I've been here. But Monday will be the big day.

I had two semi-weird coincidences today involving my current career arc.

One was this morning in my hotel room in Fulton, Missouri. I just turned on CNN, which was showing the weather report. They had the national map up with all the high temps for the day. As the weatherman usually does, this gentleman picked out three cities at random to mention their specific forecast. His three picks were Atlanta, Denver and Portland.

The second coincidence was the realization today that the season premiere of Mad Men was the night before my first day at Wieden. And now, the season finale comes the evening before my first day at Crispin.

Well, time to crash for now. Get some sleep while I can. I'll share the fun when I can.

Oh, now I get it.

Emo-yo-yo

I just happened across this video this morning. It is awesome for so many reason.

Then I found this. Not as extensive but also amusing in it's own right.

I think there must be a whole world of untapped yo-yo videos out there for us to discover.

I bow

I don't mean to knock down someone else out there just trying to write for a living, but I saw this ad in my Gmail yesterday and couldn't resist clicking on it.

After I was whisked away to the website I realized that it wasn't that I couldn't resist but rather that I was persuaded by a master. The Master Copywriter to be precise.

Take some time to peruse the website of Ian Fox, persuasive copywriter.

In fact, he's so good at what he does that his website is overflowing with copy. Copy and praise. Look what Mike Barrett said: "Very impressed with this letter."

That's because not only is Ian a 30-year martial arts master, but he is also unafraid to use bold, underline, all caps and even highlights. And you know what, he's just crazy enough to even combine some of those sometimes.

I mean, this guy's a stud.

Check out his amazingly persuasive personal message here.

But I warn, you might be compelled to instant hire him, even if you don't own a business. He has the effect on people.

If only I were a quarter the copywriter.

But seriously. Read the site. It's amazing,

CP+B+me

So, big news in the ad industry today. And by big news I mean, no one's really noticed but me. But still, it's pretty awesome news.

Since leaving Wieden, I've enjoyed not only seeing the American West but also the American West of advertising. I've dropped by a few agencies, corresponded with even more.

But the cake was certainly taken by the folks at Crispin Porter + Bogusky out in Boulder, Colorado. And they took my cake.

OK. That was weird.

Anyway, the big news is that I've taken a position as an interactive writer at Crispin Porter. It's an immense honor and a huge opportunity, and I can't wait to get out there and start tearing it up.
I went through an intense gauntlet yesterday. It started with a 6 am flight out to Denver and trip out to the Crispin warehouse. Eleven interviews and nine hours later, I survived. Then I had to follow it with dinner and drinks. Definitely a long day, but I had the chance to sit down with guys like Andrew Keller, Rob Reilly, Jeff Benjamin and others. It was the first long day of many to come. But that's why I'm stoked.

Let the games begin.

Agency love is . . .

  • having a party on a Wednesday night.
  • having the fire department/police department show up to our little soiree
  • then, having an Asian be the only one brutally attacked by the local area police
  • purging our collective selves of various client-related paraphernalia
We had a wonderful party tonight. I'm going to miss all of you very much. Cheers.

(I'd like to note that I wrote this last night at 1:37, but thankfully didn't post it till now. I also spelled "agency" "agnency.")
